Why Bother Buying Window Treatments?

People either find value in window treatments or they don’t. Years ago everybody had curtains, now called window treatments, on their single paned windows. Today most windows that are installed into new homes are double paned. When you stand next to these double paned windows in the winter it does not allow the cold air to come into the house like it used to years ago with the single paned windows. These new windows have transformed the window treatment industry. Now, we can be extremely creative with our window treatment designs. We do not have to use drapes unless we want to. In the Atlanta area drapes are rarely used as an insulator from the cold. You can set your creativity free and choose any style of window treatments you would like to have such as valances, toppers or cornice boards. Drapery panels are still around but they are no longer just used as an insulator. Drapery panels can help you give the illusion of a taller room and add a simplistic elegance to the room.
If you do not like having window treatments in your home but need them to help soften and complete the look of the room, then paint the wall the same color as the fabric of the window treatments. It will give the illusion that the window treatments are not even there. You will still have the visual warmth, shape, style, depth and comfort to accent your décor.

In many cases it is important to raise the window treatments up higher than the molding on the top of the window. This will allow more sunlight to come into the room and give the illusion that your windows are taller. If you have blinds on your windows you will need the window treatment to come down far enough to at least cover the box section at the top portion of the blinds. Two or three inches past the bottom of the metal box is best so you can allow sunlight into the room. Raising the window treatments will also allow you to have a “longer drop” or your valance can be deeper to show off more of the design of the fabric and to help the ceilings to not appear as tall.

Sometimes you do not need window treatments on your windows. If you have a special view as you look out your windows you do not want the window treatments to distract from the view. You want the outside beauty to be the focal point.

The most common styles of window treatments are custom made, store bought, no-sewing, shutters and creative styling. Custom made window treatments are the best choice of window treatments to help you enhance that special mood or illusion that you are trying to achieve in your home. However, you can in some cases transform some store bought window treatments to get the look you want.

Different styles of window treatments and different styles of fabrics will give you a totally different look and feel in your home. Window treatments will help you pull your room together as long as you realize they are just one aspect in decorating. You will also need to choose a color palate to know the proper color for the walls, furniture, lighting, flooring, art work, and accessories.

If you are not quite sure how to achieve the look or feel that you’re looking for concerning window treatments the best thing to do is hire an interior decorator to help you who specialize in window treatments.
